One Very Lucky Driver

By EMT Jim Lehnert
June 6, 2008

At 2 minutes before midnight, multiple calls were received for a vehicle down the embankment at the 127 on northbound I-95. As units were responding, additional information was received that a pickup truck had rolled multiple times after leaving the road, with possible entrapment.

When the first unit arrived, multiple people were pointing at tracks that went off the road, passed behind the guardrail by just a few feet, and then disappeared down the the embankment. Expecting the worst, the crew from Medic 4-2 exited the vehicle, only to be met by the driver of the vehicle. The driver stated that he had lost control after being cut off by another vehicle. After going over the embankment, his vehicle rolled over three times before coming to rest around 50 ft below the roadway. Most importantly, the driver was wearing his seatbelt. He denied all injuries, but was transported to Mary Washington Hospital for a precautionary exam.

Units: Medic 4-2, Medic 5-2, Squad 4, Wagon 6, Captain 19
