| 9-1-1 For Kids is a nationally recognized program created by an international foundation dedicated to educating children on how to get help in an emergency. The 9-1-1 For Kids curriculum is designed to teach three important points: When to call 9-1-1, how to dial 9-1-1, and what to say when calling 9-1-1 in an emergency. The program has several adjunct tools and a video, "The Great 9-1-1 Adventure" starring Red E. Fox. This video includes many 9-1-1 situations presented in a quiz show format that provides a challenge to the children as they learn. It also highlights our EMS system by educating the children on all the components: the 9-1-1 caller, dispatcher, public safety agencies, and hospitals.
This year, Spotsylvania Volunteer Rescue delivered the program to Spotswood Elementary, Robert E. Lee Elementary, Lee Hill Elementary, Berkeley Elementary, Riverview Elementary, and Livingston Elementary. The program was delivered to 6 area elementary schools and reached 618 students.
To reinforce what the children have learned from the program the REMS Council hosts an art contest. The first through fifth place winners will be invited to the regional awards dinner and announced on May 20th.
Many thanks to Doug Found, Ray Daniels, Barbara Morrison, and Bob Morrison for their assistance in helping SVRS deliver the program to so many children. |
