| Units were dispatched to the southbound 127-mile marker on I-95 for reports of an accident with vehicles into the guardrail. While enroute, VSP reported that they were on-scene with a vehicle over the guardrail and on fire.
On arrival, units found a single vehicle deep in a ravine with heavy damage. VSP had extinguished a small fire with a hand-held fire extinguisher. Witnesses indicated that two vehicles had been following each other when the driver of one vehicle lost control and spun-out, going over the guardrail while rolling multiple times. The second vehicle was GOA.
One occupant had self-extricated, while bystanders had assisted the other from the vehicle and brought her up to the roadway. The driver was transported to Mary Washington Hospital with minimal injuries. The passenger showed indications of a closed-head injury and was complaining of neck pain. The roadway was shut down to land the helicopter, and the passenger was airlifted to the trauma center at Fairfax-Inova hospital.
Note: This was one of 4 Medivacs SVRS was involved with during the day. An ATV accident and a fall from a horse also resulted in patients being airlifted to trauma centers. SVRS members on a mutual aid call also airlifted a medical patient out for treatment. |
