| Congratulations to Ben Wallace, who recently graduated from the recruit academy, and now begins a career as a FF/EMT in Spotsylvania County. Ben started his EMS career by joining the Spotsylvania Volunteer Rescue Squad a few years ago. The next Spotsylvania Recruit Academy starting after Thanksgiving will include two current SRVS members, Thomas Smith, and Stephen Zydiak. The three of them will join a long list of current and former SVRS members who are now working in the health care field.
Volunteering at a rescue squad has for a long time been a starting point for people entering the health care field. Some people volunteer with the intentions of eventually turning it into a career. Most others join to help the community, only to find out that they enjoy it so much that they end up turning it into a career. Many stay in the field working as Firefighters, Medics, and EMTs. Others move into the hospital setting, or other related areas.
Over the past few years, over 80 current and former members have entered the health care field, including 21 medics, and 10 nurses. 39 are ED techs, phlebotomists, FF/EMTs, and other health care related professionals. Five have gone into Law Enforcement. One is currently working toward a degree as a surgeon, another is now a dentist, and third has his MD and is in Internal Medicine.
Again, congratulations to Ben and we'll see you on the street. |
