MVA with Pediatric Fatality on Jeff Davis at I-95 SB
By EMT Jim Lehnert
June 28, 2008
At 20:50, units were dispatched for a minor MVA on Jefferson Davis Highway, at the I-95 southbound interchange. The assignment was rapidly upgraded when the first unit arrived on scene and reported heavy damage with entrapment, and multiple critical pediatric patients.
A tow truck had T-boned another vehicle in the passenger side, with pediatric patients in both the front and back seat of the passenger car. Off-duty firefighters from Spotsylvania VFD had removed two of the patients, including one who was unresponsive. The tow truck was able to pull back from the second vehicle, making extrication considerably easier.
Because of the critical nature of the injuries, medics on Medic 4-4 decided to transport the unresponsive patient to Mary Washington Hospital instead of waiting for the medivac helicopter. That patient was declared dead shortly after arrival at the hospital. Medic 8-1 transported a second now unresponsive patient to a LZ in the SouthPoint shopping center, where AirCare 2 transported the patient to the trauma center at Fairfax Inova. Medic 2-1 transported a third pediatric patient to the LZ, from which LifeEvac 2 transported the patient to Fairfax. Rescue 1-3 transported a fourth pediatric patient to Mary Washington, while 8-1 returned to the scene to transport the adult driver to Mary Washington.
Spotsylvania VRS offers it's condolences to everyone effected by this tragedy.
EDIT: Initially, two fatalities were reported for this accident. This was inaccurate, and the story has been updated accordingly.
