Around 18:15, the 911 Communication center received multiple calls about a head-on collision on Morris Road. The first unit on scene found a three vehicle accident, with heavy damage and multiple patients trapped. Spectators were using hand-held fire-extinguishers to suppress a small fire in the debris.
Witnesses reported that a Mustang traveling at a high rate of speed had swerved across the center line. One on-coming vehicle avoided a collision by driving off the road into a ditch, but a following Oldsmobile was not as fortunate and collided head-on. All three occupants of the Mustang were ejected. The force of the collision was such that the two vehicles traveled a hundred feet backwards from the collision point, up an embankment, and against a tree. The ejected passengers ended up between and under the destroyed vehicles.
Around 30 minutes after the collision, the driver of the Oldsmobile was extricated and flown to the trauma center at Fairfax Inova. The three other victims were declared dead on-scene, and were all extricated by 21:45. Suppression units stayed on-scene until shortly before 01:00 assisting law enforcement and the medical examiner with the investigation.
The Spotsylvania Sheriffs Office has announced that speed and alcohol were a factor in the crash.
